Your cabinets will not peel, because the grease comes off first

Paint on a cabinet almost always fails where it meets the door, not from wear. So every face is degreased, scuff-sanded so the primer grips, and primed to suit what your doors are made of.

Door style the problem rather than the color? Cabinet refacing or cabinet door replacement. Grain to stay visible? Cabinet refinishing. Doors not sitting level? Cabinet repair. Every route priced side by side is on cabinet refacing cost in Murfreesboro; the rest is on the cabinet services hub.

The shape of the door decides how much surface there is to cover and how many edges, and those two decide the labor.

We paint almost every kitchen in Murfreesboro — the exception is shiny vinyl doors

Builders fitted a lot of those here around 2002. Nothing bonds to the vinyl, so where that is what you have, we price new fronts instead.

Paint does not stick to a vinyl-wrapped door

The trade calls them thermofoil: a shaped board with a thin vinyl skin pressed over it, and very common in kitchens built here around 2002. Nothing bonds to that skin, so paint put straight over one usually peels within months. We check on the visit, and where that is what you have, we quote new fronts instead of taking the painting job.

Damp air adds days before the finish is hard

Murfreesboro averages 70% relative humidity across the year and peaks at 74% in September. Finishes harden by losing water or solvent to the air, and damp air takes it more slowly, so a three-to-five day return to service quoted from a data sheet stretches in a humid week. We tell you that when we quote, instead of letting you find out.

Your doors go back on the same day

The finish underneath is not hard enough for normal service for another three to five days. Both dates go on the quote.

  • Until thenno scrubbing, nothing taped to a door, no felt pads
  • 3–5 daysfelt pads back on, drawers and shelves loaded normally

Painting questions people ask before they book

How do you degrease greasy cabinet doors before painting?
Every face is washed with a degreaser first, because kitchen doors carry years of cooking residue and no primer bonds through it. Then they are scuff-sanded to give the primer a key, and dings are filled flat.
What is the difference between waterborne alkyd and oil-based cabinet paint?
A waterborne alkyd flows and levels like an oil-based enamel, so brush and spray marks settle out, but it cleans up with soap and water and yellows far less over white. Benjamin Moore's data sheet for its waterborne alkyd says hardness and adhesion develop over time, that surfaces should not go back into service for at least three to five days, and that high humidity or cool temperatures lengthen that.
How long does cabinet painting usually last?
The finish and the prep decide it, not the calendar. A catalyzed finish on degreased, primed doors stays sound for a decade or more; a cabinet-grade paint over grease starts chipping within a couple of years. The two that go first in every kitchen are the door beside the range and the panel above the dishwasher, because sustained heat is what breaks a finish.
What is the downside of painting kitchen cabinets?
Hardness, and that paint records the surface underneath it. A cabinet-grade paint has a softer film than a catalyzed finish, so it scuffs sooner where hands and pans reach, and an open grain that was open before is still open under the color.
Is cabinet painting worth it, or should I replace the doors?
Painting is worth it when you like the door style and only want the color to change. At $1,500 to $9,000 it is the cheapest and quickest route — refacing is $4,500 to $13,000, replacement $15,000 to $30,000 or more. It stops being worth it when the doors are the problem: a dated raised-panel profile is still a dated raised-panel profile in a new color.
